Update from Vikersund, Meldal and Raufoss

It has been a while since my last update. Since COC in Høydalsmo I have competed World Cup in Vikersund, done team-championships in Meldal and the Norwegian Championships in Raufoss.

First things first. In Vikersund I felt pretty good both mentally and physically into the weekend. But still this was my World Cup debut and I very much wanted good results

Both competitions had bad jumps and fair cross-countries. In total I am not happy with my performances. With a 31st and a 46th place I got no points but still I learned a lot from the weekend and my motivation just got bigger for the last weekends

Norwegian Championships for teams was very funny. Opplands team was as usual me, Iver Markengbakken and Mikko Kokslien. The weekend was also supposed to held a NemiCup competition but with stormwinds, rain and generally bad weather that competition was cancelled already on Saturday..

All three of us did a good job in the hill and Iver started 20 behind Gudmund Storlien and 5 ahead of Tande. For my relay I started 5 behind Schmid and 20 behind Jan Christian. I caught them both and sent out Mikko together with Moan and Ole Martin Storlien. That’s a world-class trio! Mikko beat them both and Oppland succeeded in knocking GST-team off the first place. Oppland Skicounty took their first gold ever and I also took my first senior-gold ever! HUGE!

The Norwegian Championships in Raufoss was a great experience. Give the fact that it is practically home-course it was with huge excitement and joy that I was to compete the Championships..

The jump for Saturday s competition was pretty good and I ended 5th before the cross country. I started 10 behind Jan Schmid who won, but we were 10 guys in only 30 seconds so the race was on.

The cross-country was even, exciting and tiresome. Just the way a cross-country should be like! After 2,5 km I caught the lead group and after 4,5 km I was in the lead. I pulled the whole group until 9km where Moan passed me. 300m before the finish he got those few meters he needed so he didn’t have to sprint for the gold. Still the rest of us sprinted for the silver and I won it! I GOT THE SILVER MEDAL!! I almost caught Moan during my sprint versus the rest of the pack and ended 1 sec behind. An amazing day together with a fantastic competition. I did a lot of the dirty job pulling the pack and really feel I deserved the medal! I have received my first individual medal as a senior!

So then there was a flower ceremony, price giving ceremony in Raufoss Sentrum and interview and people congratulating me. That is a big deal for me! Nice!

The Sunday we had a Masstart to do. And with an positive attitude and optimistic feelings from yesterday I skied with the best most of the race and I even pulled the pack for a km or two. I had a bit heavier day but managed a 6th place and had a good position before the jump competition. The first jump here was a bit too poor to fight for medals, but my good second jump gave me a 6th place total. I am really happy with that in a “jumpers competiton” like the masstart is.

Det første hoppet her ble litt for dårlig, men jeg gjorde en god jobb andre hoppet og hoppet forbi et par løpere og et par hoppet forbi meg. Totalt endte jeg på en 6. Plass i denne typiske ”hopp-øvelsen”. Det er veldig bra!

Totally I also won the NemiCup with Magnus Krog and Ole Martin Storlien as runners up. It is nice to be the best of us competing in Norway!

The season has turned out to be marvelous given my crash and following absence of training due to that accident. I am really happy! This is great fun! I am more motivated than ever and will use the remaining weeks of snow to take small but planned steps towards my further goals. Having said that, I am looking forward to running in the forest and taking out my bikes for their usage as well! Life without snow is also smiling!

COC Høydalsmo

Last weekend I was in Høydalsmo to compete COC on home ground. After having been to Høydalsmo earlier this year and having good feelings about the place I was really looking forward to going there!

After a few good trainings and some talks with my coaches, Thomas and Kåre-Haakon, my previous troubles in the hill vanished! So I was looking forward to COC and the good possibility of good results An additional aspect was that the top 4 Norwegians will take part in Vikersund as well.

The Saturday was a memorable day. After double jump competition on Saturday afternoon and good jumps I had a good base for good results.
I started in 9th place and I knew the guys in front of me weren’t that strong, but I also knew they could sprint and that there also were great skiers coming from behind.

After 3km I was part of the lead group, and after 5km I skied into the lead and just went all-out. From there on in I skied from the others. It was an amazing feeling even though it also was very hard. When I heard I had over 30 seconds 1 ½ km before finish I knew, all I had to do was stay on my feet and win the whole thing. J I did and after me came another Norwegian, Magnus Krog, followed in 2nd place. Ole Martin also did a great race and ended 4th.

The Sunday started early and the jump from Saturday put me in a 16th place before cross country. Here I had good skiers around me, great skiers behind and less good skiers in front. Thus meaning I could end in anything between 1st and 10th. That is so exciting and motivating! After a few km I was in the lead group together with 7-8 other skiers and I knew it would all be close calls! Druml and Rungaldier both were stronger than me that day and I ended 3rd. I got my 2nd podium ever in two days!

Now I am on my way to Vikersund for my debut in World Cup with the big guys! I expect close battles for every inch. I hope for good performances and a few good experiences to bring into the next season.

COC Wisla, Poland

This weekend was strange on my part. The competition on Saturday was like the last weekends with poor jumping and good cross-countries, as a matter of fact the best time for the first time! My skis were fantastic and I could make full speed everywhere! It is fun to bring something like that further into the season. The jumping was so and so.

Totally I started in 28th and ended 12th. That is OK. I have much more in me in the hill.

On Sunday I was sick and tired of jumping poor so I decided to throw myself on the skis and see how it went. It wasn’t a Superman-jump, but I ended 23rd and straight behind Ole Martin. I was ready for a steaming race. The snow and temperature was pretty much like yesterday until 45 mins before the start, when the weather changed. And I was stuck with a crappy glide for 10 km. But as they say: Shit happens!

I skied up a place or two and is very unhappy with the day totally.

I will bring Sundays jump and Saturdays XC with me further in the season. It will be exctiting to see where this could end! Ole Martin ended 2nd today and I skied faster than he yesterday, so I’m not fra away!

News COC Wisla, Poland

After two weekends without competitions I have been selected for COC in Wisla, Poland. After a weekend of insanely good cross-countries I am looking forward to measuring my speed against the rest of the world again.

I also had a quick drive to Spinno to get myself a new suit right before departure, and I have real faith in the new suit! It is fabric from the same roll as Lodwick and Demong have taken medals in Liberec with.

New sponsoragreement:

I have made a sponsordeal with Atello AS. This company imports CasCo, La Sportiva, Buff and Bridgedale.

CasCo-equipment is perfect both for ski jumping and cross country. I will always use glasses after the incident in Trondheim and I am very happy to be able to use the best equipment on the market. My previous CasCo-helmet did as it was supposed to when I crashed in November, so I have my protection sorted out!

Buff is well-known for all cross country-skiers and this multiwar-clothing is quite brilliant! If you don't have 3 or 4 of these you must buy some! It is worth every penny and then some!

The Bridgedale-socks might be the best socks both during training and after. It is a mixture of merino-wool and technical fabric and are real quality-garments!

COC Hinterzarten and Titisee-Neustadt

flere bilder

Finally I was ready for international duels and close battles all the way to the finish line. After the latest good results in the NemiCup I knew I was good enough to be a real contender in COC as well.

In short you could say the weekend contained poor jumping and good cross-country-skiing.

After a hard day in Titisee-Neustadt I was pretty much ready for the competitions. My focus was as usual on the task at hand, and also the specific technical adjustments I have to do. The last weeks have been hard jump-wise and I have actually competed very well. So the “luck” that I’ve had in the previous competitions did not follow me to Germany. I did a poor jump of 111m and found myself lying in a 19th place.

The XC must be done and I know I’m fast in the tracks now. That’s why I held my head high and had an offensive attitude. This track is a stressful track. The uphills are short and steep, there are many bumps, turns and the downhills are hard and with hard corners, so you never get any real rest. Actually that suits me very good as a skier. I like a bit of action! The XC itself also went pretty well. I skied up to a 12th place and had the second best XC-time after Magnus Krog. Magnus is like a rocket out there and I was as much as 30 seconds in front of the 3rd best time.

The Sunday was a new day that held new opportunities. There were hard conditions in the jumping this day, and a lot people did poor jumps. My jump on the other hand is approximately like Saturday with a length of 114m and a 14th place after the jump-competition. The difference from yesterday is that I am much closer to top-6.

After having a short talk with Thomas Vesteraas about the XC we agreed that Saturday’s opening pace was a bit too hard. I decided to start a bit slower and save some of the dynamite for later in the race. So I did as I had planned and passed 2 skiers every lap. In total I passed 10 skiers in 5 laps and found myself sprinting for the 4th place against Benjamin Kreiner and Mathias Menz. I had decided before the start that if I ended in a sprint I was going to win. No matter what. With great joy I could see in the photo-finish that I was 5 cm in front of Menz. I ended 4th! It is very funny to make a new career-best and still be unhappy with the jumping. I also have to say, Jan Christian won easily this day. He finished 50 seconds in front of nr 2 and 3. Congratulations Jan Christian! This was extreme jumping!

All in all, the weekend was influenced by bad jumping and good XC-skiing. I know that is I pull out some better jumps and lift my technical level, I know I am good enough for World Cup. My XC’x are strong and I am already looking forward to the next one.

Now awaits a stop in Lillehammer for a few days and then I’m going to Høydalsmo to compete in the NemiCup. I am still in the lead despite the eye-incident in Trondheim and I will do my very best to pull away some more again.

NemiCup Granåsen

The NemiCup Granåsen turned into an eventful weekend. With way to much wind on Saturday and a mass start. And then a double jump competition on Sunday and just to top it all off I got a trip to St. Olavs Hospital for getting a pole in the eye during the cross-country.

As I said, Saturday there was way too much wind to complete a competition on equal terms so it all was changed into a mass start competition. They forced through one round where I did a really bad jump. I was not only focused on myself but also a bit on the stupid conditions and that lead to a very bad jump. So instead we went to Nilsbyen skistadium for cross-country. A mass start means chaos, poles, skis, to many people in to narrow tracks and shouting. It’s fun actually. It’s action! J This cross country went pretty good, and I finished 3rd. Magnus Krog won 1 cm in front of Ole Martin Storlien. I finished 20 somewhat seconds behind in front of Joakim Aakvik, Thomas Kjellbotn and Petter Tande. Now we went 13 km instead of 10, because the arrangers didn’t know the laps we took were 2,6km instead of 2 km. It is a shame that we use 100 000 kr and 1000 hours a year training and meet these competition conditions.

The Sunday came and with smiles on our faces we could see that there was almost no wind! J We did 3 jumps. First a jump for Sundays XC and then two jumps for Saturdays mass start. Without a trial round I got out a bit bad and did a poor jump for Sundays XC, but I straightened up and pulled out two good jumps for the mass start. They landed on 96,5 and 96m. They are both good jumps, but the last was best. It was poorer wind and lesser speed, so I am really happy with that jump. Petter Tande won the mass start and Thomas Kjellbotn stole the 2nd placed right in front of me. Given that the two that beat me are Petter Tande and Thomas Kjellbotn I don’t feel bad. Everybody knows what Petter can do, and Thomas has 4-5 top 10-places in this winter COCs.

The Sundays XC turned into something entirely new for me. After having passed Joakim Aakvik, Lars Enger and Håvard Kroglund I was on my way passing Gudmund Storlien. Then it happened that was due to happen sometime. Poles, adrenaline, stress and no space between the skiers I crashed into Gudmunds pole with my left eye! The skin on my eyelid pierced and then there’s not that many millimeters into the eye. Also the cut was only 2mm from the edge of the eyelid in from the eye. And then when I reached for my eye and see blood on the glove afterwards I get scared. This was a terrifying experience for me.

All in all, after the visit to St. Olavs Hospital the eye-specialist could see no rip on the eye or any major issues with the eye. A blood wessel has popped and some of that blood is blurring the vision. So therefore I am taking another check-up on my eye the next days to completely call my eye OK.

What I have learned this weekend is still quite valuable. NEVER let the conditions influence my thinking. It only leads to poor performances. And always use ski-glasses or something else for protecting the eyes.

En-øyd-hilsen

Leading the NemiCup!

After the weekend in Trondheim I took the overall lead in the NemiCup and had the yellow jersey during the competitions in Vikersund.

It is a special thing to wear that jersey. It says something special and because of that it was extra fun that I got two victories in Vikersund with that jersey. During the Saturdays double jump competition I jumped better and better. I got 112m for Saturdays XC and 118m for Sundays XC.

These jumps are both good, but the one at 118m is totally awesome!

I started both XC’s in front and I kept my lead to the finish. Magnus Krog and Ole Martin Storlien both gained on me, but on Saturday they ended 7 sec behind and on Sunday they ended 19 sec behind. Both times Magnus beat Ole Martin right at the finish.

Now I am in Trondheim because we have chosen to get here early and train in another hill beside Lysgaardsbakken. I am looking forward to still defending the yellow jersey and if I do my job properly I can do like last weekend and take a double. Personally I don’t think I can compete just that well, but I will definitely do my very best and battle for every inch!

NemiCup Granåsen 3rd and 4th January 2009

The very first days of the new year we travelled to Granåsen, Trondheim to compete the NemiCup. After a heavy snowfall it was not possible to do training until the trial-round on Saturday. I dealt poorly and did two bad jumps. Both the trial round and the competition round was poor. Still it's worthwhile to make full speed ahead in the XC, and I did! After this years so far best XC I skied up from 8th to 3rd place. This also meant I collected my first podium-place!

The Sunday started like the Saturday with a really bad trial round, but this competition round was way better. Even though I still was in a 7th place I wasn't far behind and knew I could win. Even in the first meters of the XC I was skiing for the victory. After 5km I was in the lead and had a few meters on Glenn and from there on in I increased my lead. At the finish I won with 1.01 am really happy with winning by that much

One of the goals for the weekend was to prove myself worthy for COC, but I wasn't selected. Most likely because of Saturdays jump. Now I will use the free-weekend to train even better and come back twice as strong. I have done that before and will do so again!

Christmas and newyear

After having my seasonal debut in Lillehammer with a 7th and a 5th place I've had christmas vacation.
Although I never have vacation, and we at NTG have met for jumping 3rd and 4th day of christmas. I am happy with the technical adjustements I make and definetely feel that I can dominate competitions this winter. I am looking forward to travelling to Granåsen and try to qualify for COC.
Hopefully things go like I want and have planned and will have my international debut in January! :)

Merry Christmas and a happy new year from

BAD NEWS!

I have bad news. Last Wednesday I did a flip and got a bad crash. My body is beaten up and sore, but the problem is in the head. I got a heavy concussion and have to take it slow for quite some days more. Most likely we will see December before I can jump again. 95km/h straight into an icy landing area does that to one.
So now the days pass by sitting still, doing nothing ever. It is getting boring, but I WILL be healthy again really fast and have to take it slow. It is better for me to train hard and good when I can instead of halfway for a few months.
I will be back! I am going to be just as professional in bad times as in good times!

I have jumped again!

t is incredibly nice to start again after a few weeks off the skies. It has only been 3 weeks since my last jump on oct 19th, but still it is good to get back the feeling with skies, snow, suit and the air again!
The first jumps didn't gop that bad either! There are definetly things to build on!

update from Trondheim!

I am in Trondheim a quick trip today, Friday, to fine-tune my Qual-suit perfectly for the winter. The Finnish guys that sows the suits have taken the trip to Norway and I think it's worth the trip up here to be sure to get a really good suit!

My jumps will be loooong!!

Results were following:
1: Magnus Moan
2: Jan Schmid + 0.27
3: Mikko Kokslien + 0.51
4: Håvard Klemetsen + 1.12
5: Petter Tande + 1.15
6: Iver Markengbakken + 1.39

27th October 2008

There has been a long overdue for updates from me now. But things have happened!

One of the summers highlights have been the International Nordic Combined Week in Lillehammer. Here I won the prologue of the Supersprint and ended up in 3rd place.

All that week was very uplifting on my behalf. I came in 8th, 12th and 8th in the real NC-competitions. And given the fact that many of the people in front of me were foreigners that is good!

During the summer I have focused a lot on breaking my jump-technique and making general changes in order to be better in the future. It has been a lot of tough times, but I know that by taking the long way I will reach further in a few years. That’s why it’s ensuring that the air is cooler, and that snow is just around the corner!

This will be an insanely fun winter!
